Ecosystem engineers

Ecosystem engineers

Ecosystem engineers construct habitats for other organisms via their biological activities. Some of the well-known ecosystem engineers are trees, coral reefs, benthic worms, ants, termites, earthworms, beavers, prairie dogs, bison, and elephants. These engineers can rescue other species during climate extremes. We mainly study earthworms as ecosystem engineers, and how their engineering activities are altered by climate change with subsequent effects on other soil organisms and plants.
